How to price cookies for a home bakery

Cookies look cheap to make — until you count your time. Here's how to price drop cookies and decorated cookies.

Drop cookies (chocolate chip, snickerdoodle…)

Ingredients per batch (36 cookies, example)$8.10
Packaging (3 dozen bags + labels)$2.40
Labor 1.5 hrs × $20$30.00
Overhead$2.50
Cost per cookie$43.00 ÷ 36 = $1.19
Price at 25% margin$1.59 each → dozen ≈ $19

Decorated sugar cookies

Decorating is its own cost line. Time one dozen start to finish (outline, flood, dry, details, bagging). Example: 2 hours per dozen × $20 = $40 labor per dozen on top of baking costs — which is why decorated cookies are priced per piece and much higher than drop cookies.

FAQ

How do I price cookies by the dozen?

Work out cost per cookie (batch cost ÷ cookies per batch), divide by (1 − margin) for the per-cookie price, then multiply by 12. Any dozen discount should still leave you above cost.

Why do decorated sugar cookies cost so much more?

Royal-icing decorating can take far longer than baking. Time it per dozen and include that labor.

Should I match other bakers' prices?

Look at local prices to position yourself, but set your floor from your own costs so you don't sell below cost.
